HADJINIKOLOVA, L. and At. RUSENOV, 2006. Dynamics and tendencies of freshwater fish production in Bulgaria, Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 12: 163-169
The purpose of the investigation is to trace out the dynamics and outline the tendencies in freshwater fish production over the last 30 years, the current status of the production, the realization prices, as well as fish consumption in Bulgaria. The retrospective analysis has outlined the main periods and tendencies for the production of freshwater fish from in-land reservoirs of Bulgaria for the last 30 years.
The species structure of the average number of about 90% of the annual production offish in fishery farms in Bulgaria is being formed by carp, trout and big-head carp. Relying on updated information their average wholesale price for 2003 - 2004 amounts to 4.59 - 4.45 BGN/kg or 2.34 -2.77 US $/kg, which is considerably higher than the average international price for production of such a type.
Currently the consumption of fish and fish products in Bulgaria is approximately 4.3 kg/ person, being at much lower level compared to that in Europe and worldwide. The ratio is 1:5 for sea species, including also frozen species in relation to freshwater ones.
