Abstract

NEDKOV, N., 2005. Biology of seeds and opening growth stage of cv. Shipka of Valerian (Valeriana officinalis). Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 11: 639-644

Indices related to sowing qualities of cv. Shipka of Valeriana were examined by comparison with data, characteristic of the species.
Data showed that seeds of that cultivar were better or equal to seeds of the species in all cases. In terms of sowing qualities, they were by no means in a disadvantageous position.
The greatest advantage was that during the storage period from harvesting in August throughout autumn and winter until the testing in spring, i.e. eight months later, they had preserved a high germination rate of 88%, which was not mentioned in any of the books of reference.
The results obtained present a scientific contribution to development and optimization of cultivation technology.
