Study on in vitro Pollen Germination of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) before and after Gamma-Irradiation

The present study compares the in vitro germination capacity of pollen grains from six sunflower fertility restorer doubled haploid lines before and after irradiation with 600 Gy and 900 Gy γ-ray doses, which have been applied for parthenogenetic induction in sunflower. In vitro germination was observed in all investigated lines, the variation percent being within the limits from 12.67 % to 52.97 % according to the genotype. The γ-irradiation doses partially altered the percent ratios of germination between the individual pollen sources. The best in vitro germination capacity was demonstrated by line R5 before and after treatment with the γ-irradiation doses. The manifested germination potential was lowest in pollen sources R1 and R2.
