Study on the Toxic Potential of Some Herbicides in the 3T3 NRU in vitro Test*

Studies were conducted on four widely used herbicides (Diuron, Glean-75, 2,4-D and Harmony), belonging to various classes of the acute oral toxicity classification. The potential toxic action of herbicides has been tested in two mammalian cell lines – BALB/c 3T3 clone 31 mouse embryo cells and Chinese hamster ovary continuous cell line by means of 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) in vitro test. The IC50 (the concentration reducing cell viability by 50 %) was calculated from the concentration-response and expressed as mg/ml. Correlation between oral LD50 and IC50 of herbicides was established. The four preparations showed low levels of cytotoxicity in both cell lines. Cell proliferation stimulating effect following treatment with very low concentrations was observed too.
