Neptune 2 – New Productive Winter Durum Wheat for High Pasta Quality Manufacture in Bulgaria

Abstract

Neptune 2 is winter durum wheat was developed in the Dobroudja Agricultural Institute near General Toshevo. It was created out of an F3-bulk population of winter x spring durum wheat from CIMMYT, Mexico. Systematically it belongs to the species Triticum turgidum L. conv. durum Desf. According to spike morphology, color of spike, grain and awns Neptune 2 refer to var. leucurum Al. It is a short – stemmed durum wheat with plant height of 75.5 cm and very good lodging resistance. The highest grain yield was obtained in 2000 and reach to 9100 kg/ha. A high resistance to some of the most aggressive races of leaf rust and a very good resistance to stem rust and powdery mildew were recorded at laboratory tests. Neptune 2 has strong gluten and very good cooking quality of pasta products and received registration from the State Variety Testing Commission in 1999.
