The objective of the present study was to investigate the fattening abilities of the Karakchan and the Copper-red Shumen lambs fattened to 30 kg pre-slaughter weight, in view of their zootechnical characteristics, important to further conservation and breeding. The results of the study showed that at average age of 64.64 days the Karakachan lambs weighed 9.17 % less and reached 30 kg pre-slaughter live weight 5.07 days later (3.40 %) than the Copper-red Shumen lambs.
Physical traits and chemical composition of meat of m. long. dorsi. in the lambs of both groups did not show any significant differences, which could crucially change meat quality. Better results were obtained from the Copper-red Shumen lambs compared to the Karakachan ones in relation to the traits characterizing lamb quality.
