The pike (Esox lucius L.) is a delicious carnivorous fish and therefore producing of its stocking material has high scientific and practical importance. For this purpose both qualitative characteristics and quantity of natural food of pike juveniles during the first 6 weeks of their exogenous feeding have been studied. Earthen spawning pond rearing was applied. Thirteen types of food items of planktonic, periphytonic and benthos origin were found out. During the first feeding weeks pikes preferred copepods, whereas those bigger than 0.3 g swallowed mainly Daphnia and Chironomid larvae, selecting those victims that were bigger in size. Different schemes of manuring in ponds are recommended depending on the continuity of rearing or the dimension of the fry produced.
