Abstract

APOSTOLOV, A., St. SLANEV and I. SABEVA, 2002. Updated index for estimation of the breeding value of pigs from the Duroc breed. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 8: 313–315

The study was carried out on the basis of the results from the performance test of 3281 pigs, of which 1709 boars and 1572 guilts from the Duroc breed.
The results showed large variability, which is a prerequisite for effective selection. The environmental variance is slightly higher than the additive one (1.5 days) for the trait growth rate, whereas the part of the additive variance (0.59 mm) is higher for the trait fat depth.
The updated index for estimation of the breeding value of the pigs from the Duroc breed is presented as follows:

I = 10 + 0.278FD = 0.703GR,

where FD – fat depth (∑ CKL2); GR – growth rate at 90 kg live weight.
