Abstract

STOYANOVA, S. D., 2001. Conservation and maintenance of plant varieties – an important step of the co-ordinated Program for Plant Genetic Resources and UPOV integration. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 7: 571-576

The importance of co-ordinated efforts in the frame of the national program for PGR is discussed. The further steps in the process of integration to the international structures are examined for stimulation of contacts between national partners and international organisations. The priorities accepted in the international network are viewed with regard to the interested partners in the country. The national PGR program with its responsibilities for registration, evaluation, conservation and maintenance of plant varieties is presented as a system ready to be employed for better use with respect to UPOV regulations. The system includes preservation and maintenance of available reference collections for longer time and identification of plant varieties at molecular level according to the preferred international standards. The benefits to the concerned partners are argued with regard to the indispensable closer co-operation at national level.
