Abstract

DINTCHEV, V., 1999. Standard of the Karakachan dog. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 5: 542-545

The elaboration of the Standard of Karakachan dog came as a result of the necessity of uniform evaluation criteria for the oldest Bulgarian breed. This ancient descendant of the Thracian times has been unjustly neglected for years. Both the Karakachan sheep and Karakachan horse, its companions for ages, have been recognized by Bulgarian animal breeders long ago and are considered to be some of the oldest representatives of their species in Europe.
Based on studies that started as early as the 80s, we were able to classify the information collected and come up with a draft-standard of the Karakachan dog. It was submitted for discussion at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy of Moscow in 1989 and was highly praised. Later it was further discussed with the most active amateur and professional breeders of this breed and went through some changes. In this respect, I would like to express my appreciation for the active assistance of Mr. Svetlin Stoev, author of the pictures attached to the Standard and famous Karakachan dog breeder, as well as to the brothers Sider and Atila Sedefchev for the valuable remarks.

Key words: standard, Karakachan dog, Thracian molosser
