Abstract

STOYANOV, A., J. MITEV, D. DIMANOV, T. GOGOV and S. GEORGIEV, 1999. A study on Echinococcosis in humans in Bourgas region for the period 1991-1998. Bulg. J. Agric. Sci., 5: 529-534

During the last year for the echinococus morbidity among animals and people in Bulgaria was observed a tendency of raising. Since 1994 the region of Bourgas was in the first place in the country in respect of number of registered cases followed by surgical intervention. During the period of 1991-1995 about 193 patients were operated and average morbidity was 8.56 per 100 000 people.
During 1991 11 cases of disease were registered, in 1995 the number was already 67, and in 1996 - 94 and only for the first 6 months of 1998 - 46. For the studying period the rate of morbidity was increased 9 times and the most alarming fact was that some anxious cases with babies already have been registered.
The social - medical importance of this disease will increase in relation to the fact that the struggle against this disease is based on the culture, understanding and consciousness of the owners of home dogs, hunting dogs, police dogs, pets and on the community and social mutual control in resolving the problems with the wandering dogs.
